Decided it is time to cut back on animal products and move from Meatless Mondays to a full-time vegan or plant-based diet?
First of all, we’re high-fiving you from this post because this is a big and wonderful step and we’re so excited for you! You’re in for a world of delicious veggie-packed recipes and you’ll likely notice a change in how you feel and what you crave.
We remember going vegan years ago and we admit, we had a few missteps that are easily avoidable. To save you from our mistakes, here are some of our best tips when going plant-based.
One of our biggest concerns when we first went plant-based was that we weren’t going to be full. So when we first started making meals without any animal products, we loaded on potatoes, pasta, and bread. There were so many things on our minds in terms of nutrition, what to make, and what we couldn’t eat that we didn’t want to worry about being hungry.
And don’t worry, we’ve read that it takes around 20-22 days for your body to adjust to these changes for you to start feeling full on different types of protein. So in the meantime, fill up on those starchy foods so you’re not wondering what else to eat 20 minutes after a meal.
It felt like we were learning so much so fast. Like where do we get Vitamin B12? How many times were we going to get asked about protein? And were tofu-dogs as bad as they sounded? It’s a lot to take in. Taking a daily vegan multi-vitamin helped alleviate any concerns that we might be missing something in terms of nutrition. Often times we do continue taking supplements even after you’ve been plant-based or vegan for years but a multi-vitamin, in the beginning, can help you cover all your nutritional bases.
One of the biggest stumbling blocks or areas for potential failure is figuring out what to eat when you’re hungry. Many people feel like they have to start meal-planning for every minute of the day. Which can be fun, or it can be exhausting. So find a couple of go-to recipes that are easy, filling, and delicious. We like veggie stir-fry, pasta, fajitas, or veggie pizza as quick and easy dinner options. What are you going to make when you come home from work starving and need to eat NOW!?!
Condiments can be a major stumbling block for going plant-based and the worst thing you can do is to cut them out. If you love grilled cheese sandwiches or mayo on everything, you’re going to miss them when you’re cutting them out. So figure out replacements for your favourite things! Hummus or vegan mayo is a good idea and there are endless vegan cheese brands so start figuring out what you like.
Find some plant-based restaurants or dishes that make you weak with happiness. This is a fun food journey and you should be rewarding your hard work! Find some places that you love so it feels less like a sacrifice and more like a beautiful commitment.
