Anti-Aging Nutrients that Fight the Signs of Aging
By: Pura | July 31, 2017

We’ve been inundated with advertising our whole lives for products claiming to be anti aging, miraculously erase wrinkles, or take 10 years off our faces. Most of us have become immune to these claims, knowing that if it sounds too good to be true, it almost certainly is.

The good news is that science has proven there are ways to slow the signs of aging and it isn’t through expensive products. Rather it’s with nutrients from some of our favourite foods or supplements. Whether you’re eating vitamins or minerals or applying them to your face, here are some of the most powerful anti-aging nutrients to look for:

Collagen

Collagen makes up about a third of the protein in our bodies and enables our muscles to literally hold us together. Collagen is found in abundance in our organs, bones and skin. This compound plays a major role in keeping our skin elastic, structured, and helps our body get rid of dead cells. Unfortunately, the natural amount of collagen in our bodies declines as we grow older.

Since discovering the power of collagen, people have started to use it in creams and supplements to fight the signs of aging. Studies have shown that there is merit to claims that it can, in fact, make us look younger. One study found a 20% reduction in eye wrinkles after only 8 weeks of participants taking a collagen supplement. Although some dermatologists still have doubts of these results, the negative effects and risks of taking collagen seem to be minimal. If you are interested in using collagen products, it is worth discussing with your health professional before taking collagen pills, powders, or jellies.

EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate)

EGCG is a polyphenol probably best known for giving green tea its powerful health benefits including its ability to fight cancer, improve brain function, and aid in weight loss. Studies reveal that EGCG and the antioxidants in green tea can reduce under eye circles, slow down the signs of aging, and even treat acne. The amazing benefits of EGCG explain why some people swear by applying green tea to their face!

Antioxidants

Antioxidants neutralize harmful free radicals in our body that damage cells and accelerate aging. It makes sense that by ensuring you’re getting a healthy dose of antioxidants, you’re providing your skin with the essential nutrients they need to retain elasticity and reveal a healthy glow. The other good news is that antioxidants like Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Lycopene, Resveratrol, Genistein, and Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) can repair cells from sun damage, reduce the visibility of wrinkles, and help heal blemishes.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids naturally boost collagen in our bodies, allowing our skin to maintain strength and elasticity, which ultimately fights the signs of aging. Omega-3 supplements are also proven to be more effective in reducing the signs of aging than topical treatments.

This is really informative! Nurturing your mind and leading a healthy lifestyle, instead of relying on anti-aging supplements, is the key to aging gracefully.
