We write quite a bit about the latest and trendiest superfoods like spirulina, chlorella, and even bee pollen. And don’t get us wrong, we’re genuinely excited about these foods that can help us fight disease, improve our mental state, and just make us feel fantastic.
But do you know what food will always and forever be in our hearts? Avocado.
These creamy, soft, and completely versatile fruits (yes they are a fruit) are foods worth of the gods. But besides being completely irresistible, did you know they are also packed with health benefits? Although we’re sure no one is looking for more reasons to love avocado, we thought we’d give you a refresher on why they are worth having in your diet.
Yep, avocados are literally foods after our hearts. Avocados contain 25 milligrams per ounce of a natural plant sterol called beta-sitosterol. This nutrient has been shown to maintain healthy cholesterol levels when consumed regularly. A recent study even showed that eating an avocado daily can reduce cholesterol levels by 10%! (Side note- how do we get in on these avocado studies?!?)
If you’ve been wondering if you’ve been getting enough folic acid or considering taking a supplement (or have never heard of it until now), then consider adding guacamole to more meals because avocados are rich in them. Avocados contain more folic acid per ounce than any other fruit!
Pregnant women, in particular, are advised to ensure they’re getting enough folic acid for the healthy development of their babies.
We know that we can’t feel sad when we’re eating avocados! But jokes aside, the folate in avocados helps to prevent the build-up of homocysteine, a substance that can interfere with the hormones in our brain that help us feel good. In fact, some cases of depression can be attributed to a folic acid deficiency. We always recommend seeing a health professional if you’re feeling less than 100% but looking at how your diet can help you feel your best is always a good idea too!
Wondering what might help your digestive issues? To be blunt, fiber keeps us regular. Fiber keeps things moving in your system in a comfortable way of helping to avoid stomach or other digestive issues. Avocados are rich in fiber (an average sized avocado has about 4.5 grams of fiber) with about 1/4 of that fiber being soluble fiber.
Studies have shown that those that eat fiber-rich diet are more likely to be lean and less likely to develop heart disease and diabetes.
Avocados are filled with good stuff like Vitamins A, C, and K. With every avocado you’ll get calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. Plus you’ll be filling up unsaturated fats (or ‘good fats’) that support heart health and lower cholesterol levels.
